Before You Adopt
Before you decide to adopt or purchase a pig, consider the following:
” What are your LONG term plans in life? This animal will live for 10 to 20 years. Can you honestly commit to that length of time for you and your pet? Will you change jobs, or move across country? Retire soon, and want to travel?
Think First!
” Will you have a SHADED & SECURED fenced area outside for your pig? Will this be a controlled area; safe enough to be unsupervised while you are at work? Some pigs will rototill and re-landscape your yard. A bored pig left inside can cause serious damage to your home. Again,
Think First!
” Can you AFFORD annual vet care for your pig? It will need yearly vaccines, hoof and tusk trimming, not to mention any unexpected injury or illness. Do you have the means of transporting your pig to the vet when needed? A truck will do, but it would be ideal to purchase a “live animal crate”, to haul them in. Typically, pigs do not travel well in cars. Are you willing to purchase the special feed appropriate for Pot Bellied Pigs? It is not enough to “slop your hog.” Their special needs require special diets.
” Are you AWARE that your Pot Bellied Pig may reach a weight of over 150 lbs., from 4 to 5 years of age? This is common; however, a 40-lb. mature pig is actually very unusual, despite long standing myths to the contrary. Also remember, 100 lbs. is only achieved with a strict diet. Some 300 lb. pigs are not uncommon when overfed.
