NAIS and Your Pet Pig*

The National Animal Identification System has been in the works since 2003. It not only affects the food industry but also our pet pigs. It won’t matter if you have one pet pig or if you run a sanctuary….just because your pig is a pet doesn’t mean that you can sit idly by and ignore what is happening, thinking that it is only for the pigs in the food chain. This program will affect you and your pet.

Hamalot has joined The Coalition of Pig Sanctuaries and we encourage you to educate yourself on the NAIS, which will be phased in by the USDA. We are providing links on our web pages where you, as a pet pig owner, can go and read and make an informed decision on how you will respond. You will have to ID your pet unless your pig never leaves your property….that includes even when taking your pig to a vet. Even if your vet visits your animal on your property, you will still have to have a Premises Identification Number. One way or the other you will be part of the program.

You need to be informed so that you can make the right decision and become proactive in what you feel is right for you and your pet pig. You, as a pet pig owner, need to begin to contact your local officials including your state representatives. Some states are already passing laws that will enforce the NAIS program once it goes from voluntary to mandatory. Other states are choosing to opt out. Where does your state stand? You need to be the voice for your pet pig within your local and state areas. We will be posting links to each state representative which will help you make the right contacts to voice your concern.

At the present time NAIS is voluntary and still in the comment stages. Because they are at this point, many official working groups have been formed. Each will work in its own area for each genus of animal, i.e., horses, swine, cattle and llamas. There are many good groups out there and we will be adding their links as we are made aware of them. You can pick up lots of good ideas on how to approach your local officials from reading these links. The bottom line is that you must become proactive now before it is too late.

NOW! is the time to do something write to your State Vet and other local officials and be heard before it’s to late. This will effect all of us.
